How to do a Fishing Weekend

Grab your fishing buddies and head for Island House.  When you get there, mix a batch of Margaritas, turn the stereo on, get your Top Spot map, have a seat on the front porch and spend a little while mapping out your fishing strategy for the next morning.  Don’t forget to tell your buddies about how great the fishing was the last time you fished Rockport.

If you have a boat, first decide where you’re going to fish.  Then figure out which boat ramp is best.  If you’re fishing San Jose, I like the boat ramp at Rockport Beach Park.  That is about a 5 minute drive from Island House.  If you’re fishing the North end of Aransas Bay, St. Charles Bay or Carlos Bay then I like the boat ramp at Goose Island State Park.  That is about a 15 minute drive form Island House.  If you’re going to fish the areas at the South end of Aransas Bay, I like the boat ramp at Cove Harbor.  That is about a 15 minute drive from Island House.

If you want to make sure you catch fish – call one of the many local fishing guides. I have fished with several guides in Rockport over the years and have had some tremendous experiences.  I’ve also had some experiences that aren’t worth remembering.  Guides are not cheap and if you’re going to spend the money then you should expect professional service, courtesy and someone who knows where the fish are.  Book your guide early if you want him – Mondays are good days.

Don’t have a boat and don’t want to spend the money for a guide.  There are several places with easy access by car to fishing spots.  If you don’t want to get wet then there are two places I recommend - the jetties along Leggett Channel in Rockport Beach Park and the pier that parallels the Copano Bay Bridge.  The pier is well lit and can be accessed from either the North or South end of the bridge.  If you like to wade then you can access the East side of Little Bay by car and fish just about the entire shoreline.
